QUESTIONS ABOUT MEDITATION

Viniyoga asked T.K.V. Desikachar some questions about the meaning of meditation. We think that bringing some light on this subject is welcome both for teaching and for the practice of the so-called “meditation”.

YOGA-SÛTRA I.41

After reducing the symptoms of mental agitation, thanks to the use of one of the many means that are mentioned in the section about “eka-tattva”, in Y.S. I. 31 to 39, a yogin is able to focus on any object that she/he has chosen.

In this aphorism, Patanjali gives us a general definition of samâdhi. This is a state that includes a yogi, and this yogi’s mind, senses and object of mental concentration; the aim is to become one with the object.

VEDIC MEDITATION

This article is the first of two about “Vedic meditation”, which includes different forms of meditation that are based on the most ancient Indian tradition. This was passed on to us by Shrî T. Krishnamacharya and then by his son and disciple, T.K.V. Desikachar. These teachings are largely imbued with classical yoga and they continue to be very popular in India.

Vedic meditation does not reject any means; it may use physical exercises (âsana), respiratory exercises (prânâyâma), chants or specific recitations (mantra), visualizations, symbols, ritual gestures, etc.

This kind of meditation leads us to a favorable mental (citta) state of openness and clarity; it allows us to find solutions and answers, to which we usually have no access.

MEDITATION

The practice of Yoga includes what people usually call meditation (dhyâna). Actually, meditation is for the mind what postures (âsana) are for the body.

BEYOND THE PAIRS OF OPPOSITES

The practice of postures (âsana) and breathing (prânâyâma) are two major keys in yoga practice. Patanjali teaches that physical mastery leads to the mastery of the pairs of opposites and breath mastery produces a state that is beyond all techniques…

This article suggests some clues, which can be explored, in order to have a possible glimpse of these facts presented by Yoga-Sûtra.
